UPDATE: it is rust. the rocker panels have rotted away so badly, and probably don't have much of a structure. The brake lines are rotting away pretty badly as well.
The escape cannot pass safety, I'm either selling it to a bodyworking buddy of mine in Montreal or parting it out.
I'm gonna miss those seats, they're the best though.

I got failed once in CT with my 81 Audi 5000 turbo because the light bulb on the automatic shifter wasn't lighting up. That little of a detail?

I guess it's time to give and turn it into a race car.

It's said to be one that isn't easily or cheaply fixable.

I'm in Southeastern Ontario, just north of the rustbelt. there's other things that need to be done, such as the rubber brake lines are rotting away too.

Ironically, that's considered acceptable in the State of California as long as the emissions are good.

I'd part it out if you want to maximize your profits. If you want the easy route, selling it to somebody would get that done fast.

When I worked at Carmax, a guy wanted to sell his 2005 Escape. He was pretty weird, but the car was seemingly mint. I asked him (as I have to by Carmax) "Is the car safe to operate?". He answered 'Yes' - I didn't doubt him because it looked really good, and it was only six years old at the time.
Ten minutes later I'm getting yelled at by an appraiser because he was driving an Escape that had absolutely no brakes . He stopped it by shifting it into neutral and drifting it up a curb (don't ask me how the owner got it there).
We offered him $1,000 for his 2005 Escape with like 80K in good shape aside from the brakes, because it's safe to say the guy was a dick for lying about something so dangerous.
He took it.

I could sell the wheels, and the rest of the car with steelies as well, since the powertrain has a long way to go.

that's something I want to do, but the drivetrain still has good way to go though.

Move someplace that doesn't do inspections then... like Wisconsin.

Buffalonian here...based on my casual observations those Escapes don't put up too well with the climate up here in the north. I doubt you're the only one with an issue like this on an older model

Aren't the rubber brake lines a rather reasonably priced exchange part? I had to get new ones on my last Mazda, and I don't even rember how much they were. As a cash-strapped university student that I was at that time I would have remembered if it was serious money.
As for the rust, a bit of oil/dirt, or tape, or newspaper with a rattle can of black underbody coating might do the trick.

I also forgot to mention, The seals for all of the drivetrain components are giving up without hesitation as well, and to fix all of that will be burning a big hole in my wallet.

The Escape had a recall for the subframe rusting earlier this year ( http://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos… ) Do you think it can help you?

I get safety issues, but they'll fail you for oil leaks? Fix the safety stuff to pass, keep your fluids topped off!

the whole drivetrain is leaking, that includes the transmission, transfer case and differentials. My mechanic recommended keeping it off the road, and to get my money back, part it out.
